Description

Handmade in Dublin | Rooted in Irish Craft and Tradition

Made with care and shaped by tradition, the McDonagh Green Herringbone Tweed Waistcoat is a quiet tribute to Ireland’s rich textile heritage. Woven in a classic green herringbone tweed with flecks of colour that recall the soft greens, yellows, and earthy browns of the Irish countryside, it brings a sense of place to every outfit.

Each waistcoat is designed and handmade in Dublin by skilled tailors who continue a craft passed down through generations. From the first cut to the final stitch, there's a thoughtful intention in every detail—a reflection of the pride we take in making clothing that last, and that mean something to the people who wear it.

With a classic six-button front, a full cloth back, and a gentle, well-balanced fit, this piece moves easily between occasions—layered over a shirt for a relaxed day, or styled with a jacket for something more formal. Inside, a satin lining printed with a uniquely designed map of the world that quietly honours the journeys taken by the Irish diaspora, and those who feel a connection to Ireland, wherever they are.

Whether it’s chosen for its comfort, its story, or simply its timeless style, the McDonagh Waistcoat is made to be worn, appreciated, and passed on as an heirloom for future generations to enjoy.

Why Making In Ireland Is So Important To Us
This tweed waistcoat is made in Balbriggan, Dublin by a team of skilled hands who understand the value of thoughtful design and long-lasting quality. Every piece is cut, sewn, and finished in small batches, using  tweed chosen for its rich texture and strength. Designed to feel as good as it looks, it’s lined for comfort and finished with carefully selected trims that speak to quiet attention to detail. By keeping production local and small-scale, we honour traditional craft while supporting a more sustainable way of making. It’s something to wear, and to feel proud of—Irish-made, through and through.

Green Herringbone Tweed
Herringbone tweed is a classic wool fabric known for its distinctive V-shaped weave that resembles the bones of a herring fish. This pattern isn’t just decorative—it enhances the structure and resilience of the cloth, giving it a rich texture and natural drape. Traditionally woven from pure wool, herringbone tweed is breathable, insulating, and naturally water-resistant, making it an ideal choice for cooler climates. The subtle colour flecks you often see are created by blending different fibres during the spinning process, giving the fabric depth and a connection to the landscape that inspired it. It’s a fabric that’s both beautiful and built to last, especially when woven and finished with care.

Caring For Your Tweed Waistcoat
To keep your tweed waistcoat looking its best, we recommend gentle care. Hang it on a shaped hanger to help maintain its form, and give it time to air between wears. Spot clean any marks with a damp cloth and mild detergent, and for a deeper refresh, dry cleaning is the safest option. Avoid machine washing or tumble drying, as tweed benefits from a little patience and proper care to last for years.

Inspired By Thomas MacDonagh
We seek our inspirations from our rich history and its key characters.Thomas MacDonagh was born on 1 February 1878 in Cloughjordan, County Tipperary. He began his career as a teacher and later moved to Dublin, where he co-founded St. Enda’s School (Scoil Éanna) with Patrick Pearse. There, he served as assistant headmaster, dedicated to shaping a new generation through education rooted in Irish culture and language.

A gifted writer and literary scholar, MacDonagh was appointed as a lecturer in English at University College Dublin. His passion for poetry and drama was well known, and his play When the Dawn is Come was staged at the Abbey Theatre in 1908.

MacDonagh joined the Irish Volunteers in 1913 and became Director of Training in 1914. He was sworn into the Irish Republican Brotherhood the following year and played a key role on its Military Council during the planning of the Easter Rising.

In the 1916 Rising, he commanded the Second Battalion of the Irish Volunteers, which occupied Jacob’s Biscuit Factory and nearby buildings in Dublin. Following the collapse of the rebellion, MacDonagh was court-martialed and executed by firing squad at Kilmainham Gaol on 3 May 1916.
